ROCK HALL — A pair of pre-kindergarten teachers were celebrated for their work helping H.H. Garnet Elementary School receive state accreditation.

Laura Morrone and Christie McElhenny were honored with the Golden Anchor Award at a Kent County Board of Education meeting Monday, May 8.

The Golden Anchor Award is presented each month to staff members or groups of employees who exemplify the mission and core values of Kent County Public Schools.

“Kent County Public Schools is an anchor organization that creates an environment of academic excellence through a collaborative, equitable and rigorous learning community,” the mission statement reads.

Nominations may be submitted by Kent County Public Schools staff members, parents and students.

Garnet Elementary School Principal Brenda Rose presented the awards May 8 to Morrone and McElhenny.

Rose spoke about meeting with the state accreditation team and the classroom observation process. She said the effort has ensured that Garnet Elementary School has been accredited through April 2026.

"Thank you Laura and Christie for all your hard work with the accreditation process and for all that you do for all of our students at Garnet Elementary School," Rose said.
